Jakarta, Indonesia – The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) warned the public regarding seven drugs from three pharmaceutical industries that were proven to produce syrups contaminated with ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG).

Through its official Instagram account (@kemenkes_ri), the Ministry of Health released the seven drugs, namely:

  1. Flurine DMP Syrup (PT Yarindo Farmatama/PT Yarindo)

  2. Unibebi Cough Syrup (PT Common Pharmaceutical Industries/PT Common)

  3. Unibebi Fever Drop (PT Common Pharmaceutical Industries/PT Common)

  4. Unibebi Fever Syrup (PT Common Pharmaceutical Industries/PT Common)

  5. Paracetamol Drops (PT Common Pharmaceutical Industries/PT Common)

  6. Paracetamol Peppermint Flavored Syrup (PT Afifarma)

  7. Vipcol Sirup (PT Afifarma)

It is known, the seven drugs are drugs that are proven to contain EG and DEG exceeding the safe threshold based on the results of the investigation by the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM).

According to BPOM, according to Pharmacopoeia and recognized national standards, the safe or Tolerable Every day Consumption (TDI) for EG and DEG contamination is 0.5 mg/kg body weight per day.

Previously, the content of EG and DEG in syrup has been determined as the cause Atypical Progressive Acute Renal Failure (ARF) in children. As an alternative, the Ministry of Health stated that other medicinal preparations, such as pills, capsules, suppositories (anal), or others could be alternative choices.

Regarding acute kidney failure in children, parents are asked to be alert and immediately take the child to the nearest health care facility if the child has symptoms of acute kidney failure, such as:

  1. Changes in the color of urine / urine

  2. Decreased frequency to the absence of urination activity

  3. Children experience symptoms of fever, cough, runny nose, to nausea and vomiting

As of Thursday (11/3/2022), the Ministry of Health has recorded 323 whole cases of acute kidney failure patients in children. This knowledge is the cumulative number of 28 provinces in Indonesia. A total of 190 patients of whom have been declared dead.
